Hair Fall

A little hair loss every day is normal but when you start losing hair to the limit of going bald, it can get very distressing. Hair fall, scanty hair, hair breakage, hair thinning or balding are all conditions that could be concerning and would require professional intervention and treatment. Thankfully, a lot of treatment options are available today to combat these problems.

What causes hair loss problems?
A lot of the time, finding your hair on your pillow or in your hairbrush or in the bath can get annoying but is still manageable. However, when things start to escalate, looking into what is causing hair loss becomes very important to be able to rightly treat the problems. Reduced hair growth causing hair loss, hair loss as a symptom or side effect of ageing, hair loss caused by medical conditions, hair loss due to hair breakage, hair loss as a result of thinning of hair volume, and hair loss due to baldness are all different but ultimately all the issues lead to hair loss. Some of the causes of hair loss could be as follows:

  • Male or female pattern baldness, also known as androgenetic alopecia, could be one reason for hair loss leading to balding
  • Oily scalp caused by the over-active oil glands or over-reactive sebaceous glands makes a breeding ground for dust, dandruff, and other debris. This clogs the hair follicles and roots and leads to hair fall.
  • Hormonal changes in women during menstruation, pregnancy, could cause hair loss
  • Hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can both result in hair loss
  • Stress is a big contributor to hair fall
  • Certain medications, like anti-depressants, anticoagulants, certain oral contraceptives, and chemotherapy cause hair loss
  • Poor hair care habits like over-brushing, using too many harmful hair products, hairstyling that involves heat (hairdryers, straighteners, curling irons, etc.), constantly coloring hair, perming, could all lead to hair breakage and ultimately hair loss
  • Poor lifestyle choices including lack of exercise, poor sleeping habits, nutrient-deficient food intake, etc. could also lead to hair loss
  • Serious medical disorders like lupus, sex-hormone imbalance, or an autoimmune disease like alopecia areata lead to severe hair loss.
