Saggy Skin

Sagging skin, or loose skin that makes your skin look flappy, can be a cause for stress for so many of us. What makes your skin appear to be sagging is mainly the loss of fat. So in case you end up losing a lot of fat, it is possible that your skin will be saggy on your face and body. That’s not an excuse to not exercise though and in fact, certain exercises can help improve moderately saggy skin.

Skin sagging is a natural process that also happens due to age. There are a lot of options to take care of skin sagging ranging from over-the-counter products to more invasive surgical treatment options.

What causes saggy skin?
There are several reasons that can cause saggy skin, apart from ageing.

  1. Reduction of collagen and elastin in the dermis (middle layer of the skin) and the loss of your skin’s supportive connective tissue are major causes of saggy skin.
  2. Loss of fat, especially among people who experience significant weight loss, can cause the skin to get saggy.
  3. Pregnancy can cause the skin to sag as women acquire fat for which the skin stretches and then once they have the baby, they lose that fat, leaving the skin to sag. Women carrying multiples could potentially see more skin sagging
  4. Certain medical conditions and illnesses can cause the skin to sag for example, in hereditary conditions like the Elhers-Danlos syndrome in which a defect in collagen production occurs results in saggy skin often on the face.

Apart from this though, sun exposure, pollution, stress, poor lifestyle choices, poor dietary habits, lack of exercise, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption are also elements that could cause saggy skin.
